Engage critically with theoretical perspectives, major debates, and intellectual paradigms in the fields of art history, visual culture and arts criticism, and to encourage comparative reflection on the shared and contested knowledge produced therein. Josie Cockram, Lecturer in Contemporary Art and Curation, leads professional practice lectures, seminars and workshops. This strand of the course equips students with the practical production skills they need to make contemporary art happen, and to engage audiences across all our communities. Cathy is an artist, writer and academic whose work is concerned with how art can be created and distributed in collaborative partnerships and through the creation of commons. The judges commended the partnership for the wider benefits the outstanding arts programme has had on the creative economy. They recognised the partnership as a fantastic example of how business can use the power of the arts to create innovative and sustainable connections with the wider community. As well as celebrating the programmes impact record the judges also noted the excellent staff engagement. The judges felt this was a compelling and inspiring new partnership that demonstrated the success of multiple businesses supporting the arts. The consortium was a true example of how collaboration can create a strong and sustainable arts programme for the community.

Support for postgraduate students

We also did an extremely useful module in art law – I’m practising stuff now that I learnt in my art and copyright law lectures . It was a really comprehensive introduction to the dynamics of the art world but also gave you an insight into the variety of jobs out there. Here you can access a wealth of exhibitions, museums and galleries, including the V&A Museum, the Tate Modern and the Natural History Museum. There are also well-equipped lecture theatres, seminar rooms and computer resources on campus. Travel costs are not included in your tuition fees but we do have a free intersite bus service which links the campuses, Surbiton train station, Kingston upon Thames train station, Norbiton train station and halls of residence.

Overall the MA has been an excellent opportunity to network within the art world and expand upon my own personal interests. NTU and Exeter are working in partnership to deliver six split-site Biomedical PhD studentships. If successful, you will benefit from expert supervision from researchers in both editions-mld.com institutions and have the opportunity to research and live in two great locations, for up to eighteen months in each.
