Cast away in the protected Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of southern Mozambique, Benguerra is a place where sandbars shimmer like nacre and leggy flamingoes pick their way delicately through the channels. A short sail by dhow east of the town of Vilanculos, the fine sand here is fringed by a two-mile-long coral reef, while migrating humpbacks and huge whale sharks pass majestically further offshore. The shot-silk waters are also home to the largest dugong population in the western Indian Ocean, and inland you’ll find congregations of crocodiles and all manner of bird species.

Head though the gate and follow the stony farm track of to the right.


We’re not fussed about a few mad carpets when every room has a view over the cliffs of Rhossili Bay. Take advantage of the view with their restaurant’s cliff-top terrace – bagsy a table and settle in for some proper pub grub. Watersmeet Hotel offers glorious views over the sea to Lundy Island. There’s a pool on-site, but guests are more likely to use the private steps to Combesgate Beach.

Camber Sands, East Sussex

The eastern coast faces the Pacific Ocean, making surfing and body boarding popular activities, while the western coast offers calmer waters and views of Mount Fuji when visibility is very good. Fishing still dominates this shingle; boats, nets and buoys are spread all over pebbles. The adjacent village is charming and picturesque, but the best lunch is found at the beachfront cafe, which serves up a nostalgic menu of sandwiches , ice cream and cracking views of the jagged chalk cliffs. A favourite among families and dog owners, Saunton Sands is a vast three-and-a-half-mile stretch of the gold stuff, flanked by dunes with tufts of green and a row of colourful beach huts. There’s room enough for dogs to run amok, without treading on the toes of sunbathers, surfers and beach-loungers. There’s also a strong community feel here, with regular beach cleans and BBQ days, as well as spectacular D-Day events with military rallies and battle reenactments.

  • Ryde beaches are easy to get to and you’ll enjoy some of the warmest bathing waters on the Island as the incoming tide warms itself coming in over the hot sand.

  • Great Yarmouth’s Central Beach is a glorious sandy beach between Britannia and Wellington Piers adjacent to Marine Parade and makes the ideal location for a family day at the seaside.
  • But given its remote location in one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries, any beachcombers are unlikely to have to jostle for space.
  • Facilities are ample – there’s even public wi-fi at the Knoll Beach visitor centre.

Miyako IslandMiyako Island is the fourth largest island in Okinawa Prefecture and is known for having some of the best in Japan and as a great destination for snorkeling and diving. There are picturesque sand beaches for swimming and sunbathing, and coral reefs for snorkeling. Kume IslandThere are three main beaches on Kume Island that offer swimming and snorkeling opportunities. Not far away is a seven kilometer long white sand bar known as Hatenohama Beach , which can be accessed only by boat tours. Making up our dog-friendly 84 room residential block, the Deluxe Chalets measure 38 square meters each and feature a private, furnished balcony or patio.

It’s overlooked by the fantastic Wickaninnish Inn, an atmospheric place to shelter and keep an eye out for passing sea otters when bloated storm clouds roll in. Freshwater Bay is one of the most picturesque beaches in West Wight and lies just to the South of the town of Freshwater. Cowes Beach is a short pebble and shell covered beach to the west of the town front or Parade.

West Wittering Beach, West Sussex

Public facilities include showers, changing rooms and toilets. EnoshimaBeaches line the entire coast to the east and west of Enoshima. Subtropical Okinawa Prefecture is famous for its white sand beaches, turquoise waters and warm climate with temperatures barely falling below 15 degrees in winter and beaches that are open year round. The best time to go swimming is from around late May until October. Always beware of strong currents that can pull you out to sea and poisonous creatures such as Habu Jellyfish, a type of box jellyfish, that are most prevalent from June to October.

Throw the windows open and enjoy the fresh air and the views before you step out for your day on the beach. Children are more than welcome at THE PIG-on the beach, both in the restaurant and to stay. A trip to THE PIG-on the beach is not complete without a day spent on the fine sandy beaches that stretch the length of Studland Bay. Winterton-on-Sea near Great Yarmouth has mile upon mile of pale, sandy beach and sand dunes stretching into the distance.

Awaroa, South Island, New Zealand

The area is known as Indonesia’s Little Maldives due to its agate seas and white-sugar beaches, but the island still retains something of a wild feel. Seram sits amid several tectonic plates, meaning that the surrounding landscape varies cinematically, from lush, bird-speckled tropical rainforest to ogre-like mountains. The beaches at Ryde lie on the north east coast of the Isle of Wight and offer miles and miles of sandy shores. If you’re staying longer than a night or two, a car’s handy for exploring. Less than three hours from London, the Studland Bay peninsula is best reached via the car ferry across the mouth of Poole harbour. You can also reach Studland without using the ferry by following the B3351 down towards Swanage.
